Juan Manuel Cañizares played his flamenco guitar with the Barcelona Symphony and National Orchestra of Catalonia (OBC) in a programme that includes the premiere of his latest work: the Mediterranean Concert for guitar and orchestra in the memory of Joaquín Rodrigo.

Cañizares explores the bows that unite the classical music and the flamenco soul on the 'Mediterranean Concert for guitar and orchestra in the memory of Joaquín Rodrigo'.

The purity of the flamenco tradition, as well as the virtuosity and classical discipline of Juan Manuel Cañizares, make this famous guitarist and composer of Sabadell a musical reference in the classical music and flamenco. After the international success of his Al Ándalus Concert for flamenco guitar and orchestra, dedicate it to his friend Paco de Lucía and to premiere the National Auditorium of Madrid in 2016 under the direction of Josep Pons, Cañizares explores the bows that unite the classical music and the flamenco soul on the Mediterranean Concert for guitar and orchestra in the memory of Joaquín Rodrigo.

As Cañizares says “The Mediterranean Concert for guitar and orchestra in the memory of Joaquín Rodrigo is the second that I have composed for guitar and orchestra, and is entirely dedicated to the maestro Joaquín Rodrigo (Sagunto, 1901 – Madrid, 1999), who opened the Symphonic world to me with his immortal Concierto de Aranjuez”.

On 2019 is the twentieth anniversary of the death of Rodrigo teacher. For such a noticeable occasion, he Mediterranean Concert for guitar and orchestra pays Cañizares pays a double tribute to him. On the one hand, the recording of a record with his guitarist works, which will be entitled by Rodrigo by Cañizares (planned for the spring of 2019). On the other, the composition Mediterranean Concert for guitar and orchestrain memory of Joaquín Rodrigo, which has been premiered on November 30 at L’Auditori de Barcelona, with the support of the Barcelona Symphony and National Orchestra of Catalonia (OBC) (which ordered me the work) and under the direction of the master Kazushi Ono.

For the world premiere of the Mediterranean Concert for guitar and orchestrain memory of Joaquín Rodrigo, Cañizares used the highest range of the five existing models, the so-called ‘Maestro’. To this special moment, Cañizares and Vicente Carrillo donated a guitar called ‘Model Cañizares – Maestro’ to the Museu de la Música de Barcelona to enrich their wonderful guitar collection.
